Synopsis

In the secret world of vampires and werewolves where the battle for good against evil continues, Paxton Holt is plucked from obscurity as the last in the line of the sacred and revered hunters.

He finds himself deeply immersed in a complex world of death and destruction, his grandmother is kidnapped by the most powerful vampire of all and he is helpless to do anything until his powers have developed fully. Guided by the Covenant of the Light, Paxton has to develop his skills and to learn who to trust.

As he embarks on his journey towards immortality, he realizes suddenly that the hunter has become the hunted and if he loses the fight, evil will take over the world leading to a bloodied and frenzied attack on humanity itself.

From somewhere, deep within, Paxton has to find his inner strength and his faith and to prepare for the most gruesome battle of all.

My review:

When I first heard that this book was based off of the idea of Supernatural, I immediately wanted to get my hands on this book. At the beginning of the story, I listed a couple things that made this story different from most YA books; the protagonist is a teenage boy, the story shifts from present to past and vice-versa, multiple biblical references, more action verses romance (which is very refreshing), etc.

To start off, the main protagonist is Paxton Holt, a teenage boy (just before he finished high school) who is literally thrown into this new world full of vampires and werewolves, as well as other supernatural creatures that are introduced later in the book because of an unfortunate connection he has with another character (who has secrets of their own). As I got more into the story, I was very interested in the history that connects all the characters together and how the author had morphed this history into his story, especially since I'm not really familiar with a lot of the biblical references; he had written the story in a way that makes it easier to understand, especially for someone like myself. It was also nice that the author explained how these mythical beings came about and the importance of the different backgrounds with each type of creature.

I felt that this book was refreshing because nowadays with YA books, there's a lot of female protagonists and love triangles and coming-of-age stories, so this story was a good way to take a break from all of that and to just look through a different pair of eyes and to dive into loads of action and history and supernatural characters! There are many biblical references throughout the book that I believe were appropriate in helping build the story regarding its history of the supernatural characters and creatures that are revealed to us.

The only problems I had in this book were some grammar issues (but that stuff happens) and there were times when the story would shift from Paxton's point-of-view (first-person) to another character's view or thoughts (third-person). Another way to explain this is that whenever Paxton was in a scenario with another character, the viewpoint of the book would shift to the other character and explain that person's thoughts and what he or she sees (things that Paxton wouldn't know since the story is in first-person).

Besides that, I wish I could explain what the second book, "Prophecy", is about but the synopsis would give away the ending of this first book! All I can say is that the ending of this book was appropriate and it surprised me, in terms of what else is to come in the second book!

Overall, I highly recommend this story because it's fresh, fast-paced, action-packed and contains a great amount of detail that really enhance the story as a whole. Can't wait to finish "Prophecy" since I started in a few day ago!

A special thanks to Eric for being a genuinely, kind person whom I've had the pleasure of conversing with and can't wait for the big things he has in store for us! Thanks again for everything! :)
